"...Does post-rock have a role in Brazil’s music scene? São Paulo has always been the source of the more out-rock created in Brazil, especially during the eighties when the influences that poured into the country kicked Brazil’s nascent rock scene into high gear—the wide ranging and virtually impossible to define genre of MPB had always previously dominated. São Paulo was the center of an experimental new wave scene, while Rio de Janeiro produced mostly derivative pop-rock hybrids.

Unlike Rio, which is the classic Brazilian stereotype of sun, sea, and dazzling tropical beauty, São Paulo can be cold, grey and downright miserable at times, and the city is absolutely crawling with hipsters, creating thriving experimental music networks with musicians collaborating and working on several simultaneous and varied projects. Members of Hurtmold can be found in the backing band of avant-Samba hip-hoppers Instituto and drummer Takara contributed to the excellent O Ciclo Da Decadençia by Cidadão Instigado which has to be heard to be believed, coming across as a kind of cracked post-punk King Crimson hybrid.

As well as working with The Eternals, last year Hurtmold collaborated with Rob Mazurek of Chicago Undergound and Isotope 217 further strengthening the Chicago/São Paulo interface and leaves me wondering what else will come out of this somewhat unlikely but fruitful communion." "...In recent years, the diminutive Chico Cesar has emerged as one of Brazil's leading songwriters and social critics, taking up the mantle of women's rights, the homeless, and countless other causes in his compositions and music videos. He is the youngest of seven children from a poor family in the town of Catole do Rocha in the Northeastern state of Paraíba. It is a region so poor that many children won't reach their fifth birthdays, let alone have access to education. In Brazil, education is a privilege, not a right - and as a result, many of Brazil's children have no access to schools. Cesar's parents are poor uneducated farm laborers, but they were able to get young Chico a scholarship to a boarding school run by German nuns who had fled Europe during World War II. By the age of three he had learned to read, and by 12, he composed his first song - a composition that earned him his first guitar by finishing in fourth place in a regional musical competition. Fifteen years ago, after earning a degree in journalism, Cesar moved to São Paulo...."

"...There are two Sambas. One is Cartola, and the other is the rest. This is an arrogant assertion, but I used to think that way. As I hear many Brazilian musics, I keep discovering the giants; Brazil is full of great musicians. But I still feel that Cartola is so special.

For me, Cartola represents most beautiful essence of Brazilian music. He represents the mixture of beautiful melodies, poetic lyrics and rhythm. Though his life had been mostly in poverty, his way of living was so free. He kept his style. His music was full of mellowness and bitterness. He was elegant person in the true sense of the word. (His name, Cartola, came from his nickname. It means silk hat. He was wearing silk hat when he was working as a plasterer. He didn't want his hair get dirty.)

Despite his greatness, his records are often out of print. So, I wondered if he might be forgotten in Brazil. I once asked a young Brazilian girl I happened to meet if she knew Cartola. She replied, "Do I know him? Everybody in Brazil knows him." So, the reason of relative rarity of his records is not understandable. Anyway, if you find his records, you'd better buy whatever they are. I guarantee them all. They will surely be your lifetime treasures. They are not only "must" records for Brazilian music listeners, but also for all music lovers.

I've tried to write about him almost for a month, but I couldn't write more than the sentences above. I don't know how to continue. His music is absolutely beyond words, and every word sounds stupid when written. So, I just write very short comments on his albums. They are not to be told, they should be experienced..."

Steven Harper Dance Company - "Cremilda"

This choreography is named after a tune called "Cremilda", with a drum & bass groove played on the pandeiro by Brazilian percussionist Marcos Suzano. Luiz Melodia, born Luiz Carlos dos Santos (Rio de Janeiro,1951) is a Brazilian composer and singer of MPB.

He started his musical career in 1963 with singer Mizinho, and worked as a typographer, sales man and musician in night clubs. In 1964 he had formed the groupd called "Os Instantâneos", with Manoel, Nazareno and Mizinho. In 1973 he released his first album, "Pérola Negra" . ( Wikipidia )

Armandinho and Beth Carvalho - " O Ouro e a Madeira "

Armandinho (born Armando da Costa Macedo in Salvador) is a Brazilian composer and singer. In his early career, he played at his bands Trio Elétrico Mirim in 1962 and Hell's Angels in 1967.

In 1970, he formed A Cor do Som with bassist/vocalist Dadi, keyboardist/vocalist Mú Carvalho, percussionist/vocalist Ary Dias and drummer Gustavo Schroeter. They performed in Montreux Jazz Festival had some hits with "Beleza pura" (Caetano Veloso), "Abri a porta" (Gilberto Gil/Dominguinhos), "Zanzibar" (Armandinho/Fausto Nilo), etc.

Lately, Armandinho has been recording and performing with musicians such as Raphael Rabello, Paulo Moura, Época de Ouro, Moraes Moreira, Pepeu Gomes, Caetano Veloso, Trio Elétrico de Armandinho, Dodô e Osmar, etc.

He is said to be the designer of Guitarra Baiana, a type of electric cavaquinho.

Jongo Na Serrinha

From the video recording of the DVD "O Jongo na Serrinha: um tributo à Mestre Darcy" - "An example of joyfulness, drum beating and African tradition, Jongo is one of the greatest relics of the Brazilian popular music and considered one of the ancestors of Samba. This film is about the Jongo da Serrinha, a group created in 2000 to preserve the Jongo tradition." .

The elderly dancer featured in the clip is known as "Tia Maria" whose full name is Maria de Lourdes Mendes, is one of the oldest (87-yrs-old) living practitioners of jongo, a ritual preserved by escaped African slaves and their descendents in Rio de Janeiro and its neighboring states.

Afro-Brazilians used jongo to honor their ancestors, to sing of the pangs of slavery, and even, researchers say, to communicate with one another in a code their overseers couldn’t understand. With its innuendo-inflected storytelling, its call-and-response lyrics, and its competitive yet playful pairings of encircled dancers, jongo is seen by folklorists as a great-grandparent of the treasured samba. A few years ago, it was in danger of dying out, but with the help of a Brazilian government program called Griô Action, jongo and other cultural practices are being rerouted away from history’s dustbin and into the 21st century.

Dudu Tucci is a Brazilian musician and composer who has lived in Berlin since 1982. He studied classical percussion, flute and musicology in São Paulo. He is co-founder of Blocos Afoxé Loni and Brazil Power Drums and directs the Percussion Art Center.

Juliana Kehl - "Ele Não Sabe Sambar"

Juliana Kehl is a singer and composer from São Paulo. Juliana graduated from Faap University - major in Plastic Arts - and dedicated herself to painting, dance projects and visual arts. She only returned to music in 2003 when she sang at a show in honor of Vinicius de Moraes,. In 2005 she started composing her own songs . Her first compositions were written together with her sister, the essayist and poet Maria Rita Kehl.

Juliana’s released album, produced by Gustavo Ruiz (guitarist of Mariana Aydar’s band, Trash pour 4 and Dona Zica), and Dias Paes – “Dipa” (multimedia artist of Teatro Oficina), mixes vintage and contemporary sound. Ten of the twelve tracks are her compositions. ( myspace )
