Junio Barreto - "Se Vê Que Vai Cair Deita De Vez"

.

Junio Barreto : Live at the Radiola, TV Cultura.December 2008.

"You could call Junio Barreto a late-developer, when he releases his first CD at age 40. His life has been about music. Born in Caruaru (Pernambuco), Junio moved to Recife first and then to São Paulo. In Caruaru, famous for its Festas Juninas with forró music, he absorbed his first taste for music. In Recife the Mangue Beat infected him. Soon he found himself in a band, playing the harmonica, with a repertoire of pop and rock songs from both Brazilian artists and English/American bands. Slowly he trained his vocal skills and was found more and more behind the microphone singing."....

Martinho da Vila - "Tudo Menos Amor"

.

An important composer of the samba of the hills, Martinho da Vila has written many successful sambas-enredo (the vehicles for the parades of the samba schools during the Carioca Carnival). As a composer and interpreter, he has recorded more than 30 LPs and CDs, some of which have sold over one million copies. His songs have been recorded by many interpreters, among them Simone, Beth Carvalho, Roberto Ribeiro, and Alcione.

At 13, da Vila began to frequent the Escola de Samba Aprendizes da Boca do Mato. At 15, he wrote the samba de terreiro "Piquenique." In 1957, he began to write one samba-enredo per year for his samba school's parade, beginning with "Carlos Gomes" in that year, and following with "Tamandaré" (1958), "Machado de Assis" (1959), "Rui Barbosa na Conferência de Haia" (1960), and nine others in subsequent years. Along with the role of composer, he also was the mestre de harmonia of that school. In 1965, the school paraded to his samba "Construtores da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro," and in the next year he moved to G.R.E.S. Unidos de Vila Isabel (where he developed a new style of samba-enredo) and adopted the nickname Martinho da Vila.

Monica Salmaso -"Canto em Qualquer Canto"

.

From the album "Voadeira" (1999)

"Just barely into her 30s, the São Paulo singer is already high on the list of her country's vocal artists. Her velvet-toned sound, focused intonation and understated but tenaciously lively rhythms are the hallmarks of a gifted, natural performer. Salmaso could easily have used those gifts in a typically high-voltage Brazilian setting. But she chooses, instead, to work with only a trio for accompaniment… framing her songs in spare, musically insightful settings."

Marisa Monte & Carlinhos Brown - "Vide Gal"

.

..." Carlinhos Brown began drumming as a child. No, there weren't any drum kits. As many children in Bahia do, Carlinhos began selling bottles of water on the streets. His first drums were the empty water bottles he carried back at the end of each day. As a teenager. after falling in love with the music of James Brown, he changed his name from Antonio Carlos Santos Freita to Carlinhos Brown. He began playing music from all over the world, Angola, Cuba, America, and Brazil, taking tunes of Elvis Presley, James Brown, and Roberto Carlos, and transforming the music with an Afro-Bahian sound. In the early 1980s, he was hired by Salvador's radio station WR to compose advertising jingles, pop tunes, with that Afro-Brazilian drum beat. They becamse instant hits. This led to collaborations with Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Djavan, and others, and gave Brown the opportunity to launch the band Timbalada. The group is named after the timbal, a small hand held drum which he designed." .... ( Dan Rosenberg, RootsWorld.com )

Fundo de Quintal - " Primeiro Amor "

.

Grupo Fundo de Quintal , or simply known as Fundo de Quintal , is an influential samba group in Rio de Janeiro at the end of the '70s. They are considered the pionners of the pagode genre which gave new life to samba starting in the '80s.

The original lineup included Almir Guineto, Jorge Aragão, Sombrinha (cavaquinho/violão), Neoci ( João da Baiana's son ), Sereno (tan-tan), Ubirany (repique-de-mão) and Bira Presidente (pandeiro).

Soon after the first record, Almir Guineto and Jorge Aragão left the group to follow their solo career and being replaced by Arlindo Cruz and Cléber Augusto. The lineup with Arlindo Cruz and Sombrinha , as the lead vocals and songwriters, is considered the fundamental formation of the Group. It lasted until 1993.

Around then Arlindo Cruz and Sombrinha left the group, being replaced by Mário Sérgio and Ronaldinho, which take part in the present formation.

Fundo de Quintal has introduced the tan-tan, banjo (samba) and repique de mão, which gave samba a new sound. They also pushed samba harmonically through the use of some unusual chords. They are considered by many to be one of the most important influence in Brazilian music. ( Wikipedia )
