Samba Coco Raízes de Arcoverde - Rumos Música

.

From the interview with the Group "Samba Coco Raízes de Arcoverde",from the program Rumos Music 2004-2005, Itaú Cultural project .

" Coco is a rhythm and dance from the states of Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Alagoas, Maranhão, Piauí and Sergipe, which are all in Northeastern Brazil.

It was born in the sugarcane mills during the 17th century, and later brought to the coast. It either comes purely from the enslaved Africans or is a mix of Native Brazilian Indian and African traditions.

The rhythm first took shape in the singing of the “Tiradores de Coco” (coconut catchers), based on the sounds they made while breaking the coconuts to extract the meat. From there it became a dance.

The music begins with the performers in lines and circles, while a lone performer sings the initial verses. The rest of the performers then reply with the chorus, all the while tapping and clapping and dancing to the rhythm. The percussion instruments used are Pandeiro ( Brazilian version of the Tambourine) Bombo (small Bass Drum), Caxixi (instrument made of straw, filled with rice or seeds) Ganzá or Mineiro (cylindrical metal shaker), depending on the style of Coco. Sometimes, though, the only accompaniment is clapping and singing.

There are several variations in style, depending on whether the rhythm is found at the coast or in the countryside. The best-known Coco forms are the Coco de Roda and the Coco de Embolada. Coco de Roda is the rhythm in its simplest form, in which participants sing, clap and dance in a circle. The Coco de Embolada is the rhythm with no choreography, sung by two participants, playing just the Pandeiro, and improvising humorous verses to challenge each other. To win, the singer must compose the verses ex tempore without losing the rhyme. We can also mention the styles of Coco de Ganza, found in the state of Paraiba and Samba de Coco, form the the interior of the state of Pernambuco. ( More )

Adriana Calcanhotto - "Eu Vivo a Sorrir"

.

Adriana Calcanhotto (formerly Calcanhoto) is a MPB/pop singer/composer revealed in 1990 who had great success in Brazil, and helped bring Brazilian music again to the hit parade after the 1980s were characterized as the Brazilian rock period.

Her father, a jazz drummer, accompanied Elis Regina in her early career, and influenced Calcanhotto's taste for music. She started out in Porto Alegre playing and singing at small bars then moved to Rio, where she was invited to sing at bars of the same style. Her novice repertory of only ten songs wasn't enough for a gig, but she insisted anyway. The widespread notion that she began her career as a barbecue restaurant singer is not true; she sang only one night there and never returned, due to her small repertory... ( more).

O Rappa feat. Sepultura - " Ninguém Regula a América"

.

"From their humble beginnings in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Sepultura went on to become the most successful Brazilian heavy metal band in history. Over a ten-year period, the band grew from strength to strength, transforming itself from a primitive death metal ensemble into one of the leading creative trendsetters of the international aggressive music scene. Unfortunately, a bitter internal crisis almost destroyed the band, and Sepultura struggled to recover their previous momentum..." ( more )

Tribute to Candeia - "Silêncio de Bamba" (1979)

.

01:00 - "Silêncio de Bamba"

..." Son of a typographer, sambista, and flutist who always promoted partido-alto and choro get-togethers and also was the creator of the Comissões de Frente (group of the representatives of the samba school directory who parade during Carnival), Candeia was in the center of the samba action since he was very young. It was natural that he soon became friends with Zé com Fome (Zé da Zilda), Luperce Miranda, Claudionor Cruz and other renowned musicians and sambistas. As a member of the samba school Vai Como Pode, he was one of the founders of the G.R.E.S. Portela, the Portela samba school. In 1953 he wrote the first samba-enredo for the new school, "Seis Datas Magnas," with Altair Prego. In that Carnival, for the first time ever, a samba school (Portela) had the maximum grade in every criterion. "Festas Juninas Em Fevereiro" (Candeia/Valdir 59) gave Portela the third place in 1955 and "Legados de D. João VI" (same authors) received the first place in 1957." .... ( more ).

Joe Lally in São Paulo

.

Joe Lally in São Paulo, featuring Mauricio Takara ( Drums ) from Hurtmold.

Best known as a member of Fugazi, Joe Lally first learned bass after seeing a Minor Threat show with Dag Nasty's Peter Cortner, which prompted them to form a band. In 1987 he joined up with Ian MacKaye, Brendan Canty, and Guy Picciotto to make Fugazi, one of the most important groups in the American underground scene. In 2002, as Fugazi was on hiatus, Lally got together with ex-Frodus members Shelby Cinca and Jason Hamacher as Black Sea and released a single that year, soon after changing their name to Decahedron and issuing a full-length, Disconnection Imminent, in 2004. That same year Lally joined up with John Frusciante and Josh Klinghoffer as Ataxia and released Automatic Writing. During this same time period Lally also ran the small label Tolotta, which he initially started in order to help distribute singles from bands who might have had trouble getting their music out otherwise, though he did end up putting out some full-lengths from artists like Spirit Caravan and Stinking Lizaveta. In 2006 Lally released his first solo record, There to Here, a sparse, bass-driven set, on the D.C. punk label (run by MacKaye) Dischord, while Nothing Is Underrated, which featured contributions from both MacKaye and Picciotto, among others, appeared the following year. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide

Hurtmold - "Sapers"

.

Live at the Instrumental SESC, Sao Paulo - 2007.

Formed in 1998 in Sao Paulo and lead by Maurizio Takara ( drums ) the band is composed of Fernando Cappi (guitar), Guilherme Granado (teclado, vibraphone, escaleta, eletrônicos), Marcos Gerez (bass), Mário Cappi (guitar), Maurizio Takara (drums, vibraphone, trumpet), Rogério Martins (percussions, clarinet).

.... atypical rock formation considered by some as the Brazilian answer to Tortoise, beautifully illustrate the amazing freedom and avant-guardism of the Sao Paulo scene. Indeed, this scene has continuously been the source of many Brazilian out-rock projects from the 70's up until now. From Os Mutantes to Tom Zé, not forgetting the 80's new wave, Sao Paulo is the centre of an experimental and electronic scene, mixing numerous unexpected and successful musical influences whereas Rio of Janeiro, as a seaside resort town remains rooted in its samba and bossa heritage, and tends to stick to its tropical-beauty-sun-sea-and-beach image. Sao Paulo can have a cold, grey and rainy weather, its tentacle spread far, as far as Hurtmold's music perfectly illustrates. Organic and tormented, rhythmic and instrumental.

Hurtmold's sound is the result of a collective approach : the conjunction of a rock instrumentation and vibraphone and other clarinets give this project a unique character. The most Chicagoan of Sao-Paulo bands has already released a split album with The Eternals ( US/Chicago ), collaborated with Rob Mazurek ( Chicago Underground/Isotope 217 ) and confirmed his live talent with very intense and free performances, always keeping a taste for experimentation. Their music is instrumental but none the poorer. With quite complex constructions around a hypnotic bass, original guitar patterns and vintage
synthesizers minimal elements ( Miniotario ), dominant percussive sounds remind of the band's origins on Kampala (unreleased) for example, with its fabulous guitars, deep bass and complex rhythmics. Only trace of a more obviously rock influence, with lyrics as slogans, Chuva Negra shows the nerve and the more corrosive temper of their music, also feeding from the band's US punk roots (Minutemen, Black Flag, Fugazi, Mogwaï).

Ney Matogrosso & PLAP (Pedro Luís e A Parede) - " Disritmia "

.

..."Arriving in Rio de Janeiro in 1966, Matogrosso became a hippie leather artisan and divided his time between Rio, São Paulo, and Brasília, where he was a close friend of singer/composer Luli. Through her he met João Ricardo, who had a vision for a groundbreaking group and was searching for a high-pitched male voice. Invited by Ricardo, Matogrosso moved to São Paulo where he spent one year dedicating himself to exhaustive rehearsals, artisanship, and theater plays. With the explosive success of Secos e Molhados and the group's final dissolution, Matogrosso started his solo career exploring his unusual voice timbre, his mesmerizing scenic persona, and his androgynous visuals, enhanced by innovative and exotic costumes.. Ponto de Equilibrio - "Quem Sabe...Salomao"

.

..." Formed in a North Rio commune, Ponto De Equilibrio have adopted reggae as the quintessential outsiders' music. Of course there is a whole lot more to reggae than ''truths and rights'', but second album, Abre a Janela's colourful tales of a divided Brazil whose favela denizens are swept under the carpet fit neatly over their union of rockers rhythms with samba, maracatu and maculele.

They are a very tight band, benefiting from some fine production by Chico Neves, whose only faux pas is being way too sparing on the bass levels. There's some good Ernest Ranglin-style bobbling guitar, the punchy crisp brass is nothing shy of superb, and singer Helio Bentes' vulpine nasal tenor has been generously compared to the late Joseph Hill's - in reality sounding closer to Manu Chao on excitable form."...  ( BBC Music, 2008 )
