Roberta Sá | Samba de um minuto

Roberta Sá is a critically acclaimed MPB vocalist who released two albums before earning a Latin Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2008. Though thoroughly modern, her music incorporates traditional Brazilian musical styles and songs, and she is often compared to Maria Rita, another young MPB vocalist who sings traditional Brazilian music in a modern fashion. Born in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, Sá began her ascent with an appearance as a contestant on the Pop Idol-style Brazilian reality show Fama on Globo TV. Though she didn't win the show, she made an impression and was presented with the opportunity to perform the Dorival Caymmi song "A Vizinha do Lado" for the soundtrack of a Globo TV telenovela, Novela das Oito; the song was subsequently compiled on Celebridade (2003). A major-label recording contract with Universal followed, as did a chance to collaborate with producer Rodrigo Campello for her full-length solo album debut, Brasileiro (2005). She collaborated with Campello again for her second album, Que Belo Estranho Dia Pra Se Ter Alegria (2007). Critically acclaimed, the album earned her a Latin Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2008. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

"The Cordel do Fogo Encantado was created in Arcoverde, Brazil, located 260 km from Recife (Pernambuco), by five youngsters, three from Arcoverde (Lirinha, pandeiro/vocals; Clayton Barros, guitar/vocals; Emerson Calado, percussion/voice) and two from the Morro da Conceição, Recife (Rafa Almeida, percussion/voice; and Nêgo Henrique, percussion/voice). The group appeared in 1997 as a theatrical spectacle fusing narrative; scenery; Indian traditions (toré); a very percussive approach; the oral popular poetry of the hinterlands produced by northeast Brazilian bards like Manoel Filó, Manoel Chadu, Zé da Luz, Chico Pedrosa, and Inácio da Catingueira; the Northeastern popular literature known as "cordel"; and folkloric musical genres like the reisado, the embolada, the samba de coco, and the music of cantadores (minstrels)." .... Monica Salmaso - "Mora Na Filosofia"

Monica Salmaso at the Heineken Concerts - São Paulo - 2000 .

Upon winning the El Dorado Prize as best singer in Brazil in 1999, Monica Salmaso found herself at the forefront of the renovation of Brazilian popular music. New York Times writer Jon Pareles says "her breathy, melting voice is set against just a handful of instruments at a time, making the melodies seem even more cherished, while Bruce Gilman of Brazzil magazine calls her "the singer Brazil has needed for so long". Audiences are captivated by the magic of Monica's precise and powerful voice, quintessentially Brazilian, with a warm and velvety timbre. Don Heckman of the LA Times advises, "She is an artist to be watched, one with extraordinary potential."

Planet Hemp - "A Culpa é de Quem?

Pleading for the legalization of marijuana and supported by energetic performances that usually degenerated in violence, Planet Hemp's records went gold and platinum and they also performed with established hip-hoppers like the Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill. In 1993, Marcelo D2 and Skunk wanted to form a band, but they didn't know how to play or sing, so they opted for rap instead. But soon after the formation of Planet Hemp, they were joined by Rafael (guitar), Bacalhau (drums), and Formigão (bass), forging an eclectic mix of rap, rock, psychedelia, and hardcore, while their lyrics basically addressed the legalization of marijuana. As the object of their fascination, they took their name from a Canadian clothing brand advertised in High Times magazine. Recording just one demo tape, they departed for shows throughout Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro), São Paulo (São Paulo), Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais), Curitiba (Paraná), and in festivals like the Juntatribo (Campinas, São Paulo) and Superdemo. They became more and more celebrated by the disenfranchised youngsters who attended the energetic, noisy, and aggressive performances that invariably ended in riots. Skunk's death in 1994 was a most tragic event that almost provoked the dissolution of the group, but he was replaced by Bê Negão's vocals, and soon they signed with Sony Music. In 1995, they released the CD Usuário and scored hits with "Mantenha o Respeito," "Legalize Já," "Fazendo a Cabeça," and the aggressive "Porcos Fardados" (criticizing the police's violence). The album affirmed their popularity and it went gold. Os Cães Ladram Mas a Caravana Não Pára (1997) also did very well, going platinum. As one may expect, their records have been apprehended, the band's members incarcerated, their shows canceled, and the group is frequently a part of the national news. ~ Alvaro Neder, All Music Guide
