Turtledove, a traditional song, was recorded in the 30's by Elsie Houston. She was the daughter of a father from the U.S and a mother in Rio. She is Carmen Miranda's contemporary, a friend of Pagu and Mário de Andrade. Elsie was part of this group of artists who invented indigenous Brazilian culture. Today I find myself entranced by their memory and, like them (Carmen and Elsie), somehow I ended up here in 'Los Angeles'. My mother has the last name Miranda (no relation), and I am the turtledove, whose destiny is to sing and fly around the world.

He is an extensive traveler, working and performing throughout Africa, Europe, North America, and South America. He has had over 200 of his songs recorded by many interpreters like Marisa Monte ("Segue o Seco," "Maria de Verdade," "Arrepio," "Magamalabares"), Gal Costa, Daniela Mercury ("Rapunzel," "Rimas Irmãs"), Cássia Eller, Daúde ("Lavanda"), and Sepultura. Percussionist, songwriter and singer Alessandra Leão was born in Pernambuco, north-east Brazil. After collaborating with a number of artists (including Antonio Carlos Nóbrega and Florencia Bernales) she launched her solo career in 2006 with the widely acclaimed CD Brinqendo de Tambor. Her star has been on the rise ever since. Her compositions are refreshing interpretations of traditional music from the coast and the Zona da Mata, and are characterized by plenty of polyrhythmic percussion and interwoven guitar lines.

Kiko Dinucci was born in São Paulo in 1977. As a songwriter, he is influenced by São Paulos samba-style and composers, such as Adoniran Barbosa, Paulo Vanzolini, Geraldo Filme, Raul Torres, as well as contemporary musicians like Itamar Assumpção, Luiz Tatit, Wandi Doratioto, among others. His compositions consist of Sambas, Lundus, Jongos, Batuques, Fox Trots, Cumbias, Rumbas, Boleros, Emboladas, Jazz, Macumbas and Modas de Viola, all which have incfluenced his solo project, "Bando AfroMacarronico".

Kiko has estabished himself as a well rounded individual, not limited to only creating music. As an artist, Kiko develops paintings and drawings using samba and many different popular-afro-brazilian cultural expressions as the main theme. Kiko has also established himself as an illustrator and comic book devloper. He was the illustrator of the book “Salmos de Itaquera”, by Fabiano Ramos Torres and has also done work developing storyboards for comic books, working with cartoon artists such as Marcelo Dsalete. He is currently working on a comic book called “Cabeça de Homem”. Kiko also directed a documentary called “Dança das Cabaças – Exu no Brasil”, in which he investigates the influence of the african saint Exu in the brazilian subconscience. He is currently in the process of making his second documentary, entitled “Jardim do Barranco”.

The idea of 3 na massa came from women. Women talking about their amorous experiences with men -- moments, events that marked their life, whether seduction or desires. The songs are inspired by the sensuality of these stories. They can be happy, entertaining as well as spicy and longing like an erotic adventure in an amusement park. With Ciro Monteiro, Roberto Silva was one of the developers of the richly syncopated melodic division of samba singing launched by Luís Reis and Vassourinha. Some of his biggest hits are "Maria Tereza" (Altamiro Carrilho), "Normélia", "Mandei Fazer um Patuá" (both by Raimundo Olavo/Norberto Martins), "Perdi Você" (Raimundo Olavo/Silva Júnior), "Juraci me Deixou" (Raimundo Olavo/Oldemar Magalhães), "Escurinho" (Geraldo Pereira), "Crioulo Sambista" (Nelson Trigueiro/ Sinval Silva), and "O Baile Começa às Nove" (Haroldo Lobo/Milton de Oliveira). Formed in 2002, the Orquestra Popular da Bomba is lead by Francisco Amancio da Silva , aka "Maestro Forró" , the orchestra consists of 21 members, all residents of the neighborhood of Hemetério ( Recife, Pernacumbo state ). The orchestra presented a traditional repertoire stretching from some Mambo of Benny More to Mangue Beat of the late Chico Science, from the Swing to Maracatu, from Xaxado to Ciranda, from Cavalho Marino to Fox Trot passing through the standard renditions of the famous "Vassourinhas", "Cabelo de Fogo" and "Elefante".

Vinicius de Moraes (1913 - 1980) helped to create two of the icons of twentieth-century culture, the play "Orfeu da Conceição", which became known in English as "Black Orpheus" after it was made into an internationally successful film, and the song "Garota de Ipanema," better known as "The Girl from Ipanema."

Those two works formed only a small fraction of what Moraes accomplished. He wrote poetry for specialists and popular songs for the Brazilian people. A complete list of his occupations would also include diplomat, film critic, film censor , screenwriter, singer and recording artist, advice columnist, radio host, non-practicing lawyer, and general non- conformist with a taste for good whiskey . Moraes was always seeking something new, and that tendency helped make him a great crossover artist who fused Western and African cultural ideas in Black Orpheus and brought subtle Brazilian music to the top of the international charts with "The Girl from Ipanema." The Cordel do Fogo Encantado was created in Arcoverde, Brazil, located 260 km from Recife (Pernambuco), by five youngsters, three from Arcoverde (Lirinha, pandeiro/vocals; Clayton Barros, guitar/vocals; Emerson Calado, percussion/voice) and two from the Morro da Conceição, Recife (Rafa Almeida, percussion/voice; and Nêgo Henrique, percussion/voice). The group appeared in 1997 as a theatrical spectacle fusing narrative; scenery; Indian traditions (toré); a very percussive approach; the oral popular poetry of the hinterlands produced by northeast Brazilian bards like Manoel Filó, Manoel Chadu, Zé da Luz, Chico Pedrosa, and Inácio da Catingueira; the Northeastern popular literature known as "cordel"; and folkloric musical genres like the reisado, the embolada, the samba de coco, and the music of cantadores (minstrels). In 1999, the Cordel opened at the Rec-Beat festival, organized in Recife during the Carnival. The independent Cordel do Fogo Encantado was launched in 2001, produced by Naná Vasconcellos. Promoting the album during their first southeast Brazilian tour, they immediately caught the attention of the media, also having packed houses for their performances. The first music video, for the song "Chover (Ou Invocação para Um Dia Líquido)," was awarded in several festivals. Their first international tour was launched during July and August 2001, consisting in 11 shows through Belgium, Germany, France, and other countries. Brought up in an artistic environment, music has always been present in Mariana Aydar’s life - as a source of expression and personal freedom - a connection of sorts as if there were no words – an almost osmotic link - without rules. “Ever since I was quite small, I’ve always wanted to be close to the stage, or on it. I learned a lot just watching and seeing” she remembers “In my house, the music was quite varied, and we listened to everything. Bobby McFerrin, Frank Zappa, Dominguinhos, Luiz Gonzaga, Elis, Ella , Gal, Beatles, Yo-Yo Ma, Donald Fagen, Branca di Neve, Candeia, Lulu Santos, among many”. She studied the violoncello and music for infants and for teenagers from 10 to 15 years of age at the Brooklin Musical Conservatory in São Paulo. In São Paulo she attended the Waldorf School, known for encouraging artistic activities. There she studied theatre, choral work and general arts. She spent a year at the St. Marcelina College, but decided her time would be better spent and she’d get a more practical education, at the Groove School, in São Paulo. It was at the age of twenty, that she understood that after all her previous education what she really wanted to do was singing. In 2000, she began her professional career as a back vocalist with the guitarist Miltinha Ediberto, whose repertoire was on the whole, the north-eastern musical style, Forró. This lasted three years. During this time she had the opportunity to share the stage with some great names of Popular Brazilian Music such as Dominguinhos and Elba Ramalho. She was also a back vocalist for Daniela Mercury during the Carnival of 2004. At the same time, she was part of the musical group of São Paulo composer Dante Ozzetti. At 24, she found herself at a crossroads; she could continue her work with Caruá and record the first CD of the band or she could really expand out on a more varied musical journey. With her demo CD under her arm, she moved out of Brazil, quite alone, to look for new challenges, new points of view, new horizons. She chose Paris for its cultural effervescence and soon saw she had made the right choice “I met a whole range of musicians and heard music from all around the world: African, Asiatic, French; it was a year of personal maturing and musical learning” To see Brazil with “foreign” eyes was very important for her continuing education.... One could say Jamaican singer Papa Winnie had a serendipitous hand in the creation of O Rappa, the Rio de Janeiro - based fusion reggae/funk-rock band . In 1993, Winnie arrived in Brazil for an extended tour with no backing musicians. A pick-up band was quickly assembled by bassist Nelson Meirelles , and after Winnie's tour was over, Meirelles, drummer Marcelo Yuka , keyboardist Marcelo Lobato , and guitarist Alexandre Mennezes realized there was enough chemistry among them to start an original band. When vocalist Marcelo Falcao answered an ad in the newspaper and came on board, O Rappa (pronounced o hoppa) was born.

Like many Brazilian bands that embraced American sounds in the mid-Nineties, O Rappa incorporates native sounds into its sonic blend of rock, soul, hip-hop, and reggae, ultimately emerging with something quite unique. Their lyrics show social concern about what goes on in the suburbs of Rio and around the country without being crass or vulgar in their delivery. It has not been an easy ride for the group. In 2001, tragedy struck: Yuka, one of O Rappa's major lyricists, was shot during a robbery and became paralyzed from the waist down. Rivotrill is a Brazilian instrumental group formed by Junior Crato (flute and saxophone), Rafa Duarte (bass) and Lucas dos Prazeres (percussion), which presents a fusion of Brazilian, Latin and African rhythms with progressive rock and jazz.

Rivotrill started its career in 2006. The band members usually create their songs influenced by jazz, rock, specially Jethro Tull, and afro-Brazilian rhythms.However, they also have influences of classical music.

In 2007, the band participated of many festivals around Brazil, such as Festival Rec-Beat, Festival de Inverno de Garanhuns, Festival de Música Instrumental de Garulhos and Feira da Música de Fortaleza, and was positively criticized by press. In Festival Rec-Beat, they were considered the greatest discovery of the festival.

Alaíde Costa is an important interpreter who had great success in the '60s. She has been performing and recording erratically, but always with a high standard of quality in her dense interpretations. Kiko Dinucci was born in Sao Paulo in 1977. As a songwriter, he is influenced by Sao Paulos samba-style and composers, such as Adoniran Barbosa, Paulo Vanzolini, Geraldo Filme, Raul Torres, as well as contemporary musicians like Itamar Assumpao, Luiz Tatit, Wandi Doratioto, among others. His compositions consist of Sambas, Lundus, Jongos, Batuques, Fox Trots, Cumbias, Rumbas, Boleros, Emboladas, Jazz, Macumbas and Modas de Viola, all which have incfluenced his solo project, "Bando Afro Macarronico".

As an artist, Kiko develops paintings and drawings using samba and many different popular-afro-brazilian cultural expressions as the main theme. Kiko has also established himself as an illustrator and comic book developer. He was the illustrator of the book "Salmos de Itaquera", by Fabiano Ramos Torres and has also done work developing storyboards for comic books, working with cartoon artists such as Marcelo Dsalete. He is currently working on a comic book called "Cabea de Homem". Kiko also directed a documentary called "Dana das Cabaas Exu no Brasil", in which he investigates the influence of the african saint Exu in the brazilian subconscience. He is currently in the process of making his second documentary, entitled "Jardim do Barranco".

Jovelina Pérola Negra was one of the artists (like Zeca Pagodinho, Fundo de Quintal, Almir Guineto, Jorge Aragão, and others) who was discovered during the '80s in the wake of the so-called new pagode movement. Celebrated for her potent and swinging vocal performance and the composer of several hits recorded by contemporary samba greats, Pérola Negra (her nickname meaning black pearl after her shining color) had a hard time before reaching success. After 41 years of singing in community samba parties (pagodes) in the working-class suburbs of Rio de Janeiro (at the Baixada Fluminense), and also participating in the Carnaval as a baiana of the Império Serrano samba school, she recorded her first album in 1985 along with novice artists Zeca Pagodinho, Mauro Diniz, Pedrinho da Flor, and Elaine Machado. The album, Raça Brasileira, was turned down by RGE, and was only released after one of the recording company's directors decided to sponsor it himself. The album was a major hit, and all participating artists were called to record their solo albums. She recorded her first one the next year, Jovelina Pérola Negra, followed by seven others and one collection (all released through RGE).
