3 na Massa - "Sem Fôlego"

.

" Sem Fôlego " is from the album 'Na Confraria das Sedutoras'.

3 Na Massa was founded by Rica Amabis, Pupillo and Sucinto Silva aka Dengue in São Paulo. Pupillo and Dengue play drums and bass while Rica is the magic cook, the producer of the trio. This is also where the band name stems from, 3 na massa - 3 in the dough, slang for something that makes your mouth water in expectation of a special treat.

The idea of 3 na massa came from women. Women talking about their amorous experiences with men -- moments, events that marked their life, whether seduction or desires. The songs are inspired by the sensuality of these stories. They can be happy, entertaining as well as spicy and longing like an erotic adventure in an amusement park. Under the influence of Federico Fellini's films and the work of Serge Gainsbourg of the 60s and 70s, the music could easily be the soundtrack of the illustrated stories of Millo Manara.

The debut album release is the stories (songs) of 13 different women who collaborated with the trio to create this trip through the large emotional world of women. Lending their voice to the songs are some of Brazil’s favorites: CéU, Nina Miranda, Thalma de Freitas, Karine Carvalho and Alice Braga, among others.

Rica Amabis is a producer and sound engineer working in music since 1994. In 1999 he released his first record titled "Sambadelic", a fusion of Brazilian music and electronic beats. In 2000 Rica founded the studio / production team INSTITUTO in which he and his team produced and composed music for albums such as Naçao Zumbi, Otto, Záfrica Brasil, film (The Invador, Seja O que Deus Quiser, Arido Movie, Baixio das Bestas, Cao sem dono), amongst many other special projects.

Pupillo and Dengue are members of the popular Pernambuco fusion rock band Nação Zumbi. Pupillo is also a partner of the label Candeeiro which includes artists like DJ Dolores, China and Mundo Livre. He has played on recordings by Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte and others. ( My Space ) . Upload by " mitcr " 2008 .

Cartola - " Alvorada " - 1974

.

Samba

Found this clip on the Black Star Liners' blog- African music development/influence in the American continent . It grows on me the more I listen.

Angenor de Oliveira, known as Cartola - Portuguese for top hat , ( 1909 - 1980) was a Brazilian singer, composer and poet considered to be a figure in the development of samba.

Cartola's family moved to Mangueira hill - due to financial difficulties, where a small favela was beginning to appear.

In Mangueira, Cartola soon befriended Carlos Cachaca and other sambistas, getting started in the world of malanragem and samba. In 1928, they founded the Arengueiros Carnival Block, which would later transform in the traditional samba school Estação Primeira de Mangueire, one of the most loved samba-schools in Brazil. Cartola is considered responsible for the choice of colors of the school, which are said to stem from the colors of football club Fluminenese , which is located in Laranjeiras. ( Wikipedia )

Maria Rita at the Virada Cultural 2009

.

Virada Cultural,São Paulo, 2009: "Cria", "Recado" ( 03:30 ) and " Muito Pouco " ( 06:44 )

Maria Rita is the daughter of famed pianist/arranger César Camargo Mariano and the late Brazilian singing legend Elis Regina . ( Wikipedia )

..." Maria Ritas´ learning was made totally by instinct and in a very informal way. A conversation she had with her father, when she was younger, clearly shows it. Maria Rita asked Camargo Mariano to teach her how to play the piano. Reacting to his refusal, she said: 'OK you do not have time right? ' Her father, who is surely one of her greatest musical references disagreed; he said that he would be able to find time, if that was the issue. The problem is that he had learned to play piano by himself. 'What he plays he has learned from no one, so he has nothing to teach' understands Maria Rita now, following then a similar path. She would release her voice and that was it. She started to take singing lessons later on, to 'learn how to use the tool'. She would even like to have a formal background, but in the other hand, she is happy with the way she picked, guided by instinct and by her heart" ....( mariarita.com )

Daniela Mercury & Olodum : " Swing Da Cor "

.

Samba-reggae:

From the well produced Daniela Mercury's DVD " Eletrodoméstico " 2003 .

Olodum is a cultural group based in the Afro Brazilian community of Salvador, the capital city of the state of Bahia. It offers cultural activities to young people, largely centered around music; it also offers theatrical productions and other activities. Founded in 1979, its stated aims are to combat racism, to encourage self-esteem and pride among Afro Brazilians, and to fight for civil rights for all marginalized groups.

Olodum is widely credited with developing the music style known as samba reggae. Neguinho do Samba, the lead percussionist, created a mix of the traditional Brazilian samba beat with merengue, salsa, and reggae rhythms for the Carnaval of 1986. This became known as samba-reggae. This "bloco afro" music is closely tied to its African roots, as seen through its percussion instruments, participatory dancing and unique rhythm. It also directly draws from many Caribbean cultures, like Cuba and Puerto Rico.Olodum's performing band (or Banda) has released records in its own right and has been featured on recordings by Brazilian stars such as Simone and Daniela Mercury.( Wikipedia )

Maria Alcina - " Alô Alô "

.

Samba / MPB : Uploaded by " cantares2008 "

Owner of a distinctively low voice, Maria Alcina shook Brazil in the now-distant 1972 with her androgyny and irreverence, winning the VII Festival Internacional da Canção/FIC (International Song Festival) with "Fio Maravilha" (Jorge Ben). Others hits of hers were "Alô Alô" (André Filho) in 1973. The song, one of several taken from Carmen Miranda's repertory, was used strategically by the singer, who also employed extravagant outfits to establish a connection with Miranda's identity. During the military dictatorship, Alcina was sued due to an alleged "subversive behavior" expressed by her irreverent artistic persona. In 1974, she had success with "Kid Cavaquinho" (João Bosco/Aldir Blanc). After the '80s, she devoted herself to a repertory based on humoristic double entendre, having performed in the U.S. together with Jamelão and Emílio Santiago, a country in which she participated in 1995 in a tribute to Carmen Miranda. Nicolas Krassik and Sergio Krakowski @ Clube dos Democráticos Ball.

.

Nicolas Krassik and Sergio Krakowski play at Clube dos Democráticos Ball. Footage from the brazilian TV show 'SEMENTE DA MÚSICA BRASILEIRA'.

NICOLAS KRASSIK : The 39-year-old French violinist started his studies at 5 years of age at the Conservatoire National de Region d’Aubervilliers-la Courneuve, where he studied during 14 years and graduated in classical music. He then went to study at the Jazz school (Centre de Formation Musicale de Paris) for another year. From this point on he started his professional career playing with great names in Jazz, such as Michel Petrucciani, Vincent Courtois, Didier Lockwood, Pierrick Hardy, among others. In 1999, Nicolas was invited to teach classes in improvisation at the Jazz School founded by the violinist Didier Lockwood. During his search for new sounds he discovered a great connection to Brazilian music and so decided to move to Brazil in 2001. Upon his arrival in Rio he started to go to Samba and Choro shows and jam sessions in Lapa, an old neighborhood in Rio with a strong musical effervescence. His quick integration into the Brazilian music scene resulted in the beginning of a promising solo career.

SERGIO KRAKOWSKI : Began playing pandeiro when he was 15 years old. He learned to play informally with friends, but quickly realized the richness of the instrument and began to dedicate himself more seriously to it. He is self-taught and developed his own technique, based on various influences such as Rafael Rabello, Jorginho do Pandeiro and Marcos Suzano. Freedom of expression is a primary focus in Sergio's musical path. He believes that the pandeiro has even more potenial than has been explored until this point, including the use of polyrhythms. In fact he works on a Pandeiro technique that allows one to play two different voices simultaneously. Krakowski started his professional career at 18, playing in clubs in Rio de Janeiro with some of the great names in Brazilian music. He dedicated himself to the instrumental Brazilian music style call Choro, where he found the freedom of expression he was looking for.

Jorge Aragão - "Conselho"

.

Samba:

Aragão started his career in the '70s as a sambista at balls and in nightclubs. His songwriting career took off in 1977, when Elza Soares recorded his composition "Malandro" (with Jotabê). He was a founding member of Grupo Fundo de Quintal and one of its main composers and lyricists, abandoning the band some time later to dedicate himself to a solo career. Almost every great samba interpreter (Beth Carvalho, Alcione, Zeca Pagodinho, Martinho da Vila) has Jorge Aragão compositions in their repertoire.
