Jorge Ben Jor - " Menina Mulher / O Telefone Tocou "

.

Cult Brazilian funk musician Jorge Ben Jor has released 30 albums, written more than 700 songs, and successfully sued Rod Stewart.

Jorge Ben Jor is unquestionably one of Brazil's most prolific and popular singer-songwriters. His career spans four decades and one name change (originally performing as Jorge Ben, he added the Jor in 1989 to avoid confusion with George Benson, after the American singer was mistakenly paid royalties for a Ben Jor tour) and covers an impressive range of styles, including frenetic barroom samba, Afrocentric funk, 1970s disco and samba rock — a genre he practically invented himself.

3namassa (feat. Marina da la Riva) - "Enladeirada"

.

Rica Amabis of the Sao Paulo-based collective Insituto got together with bassist Dengue and drummer Pupillo of the Pernambuco rock band Nacao Zumbi. The idea was to musically illustrate erotic comic book frames of Italian artist Milo Manara. They signed on 13 actresses - some with singing experience, some without - to act-out tracks that tell little confidential stories about the erotic, sensual desires of women as a sort of musical bubble caption to Manara's sexy cartoon frames.

Jorge Ben Jor - " Por Causa deVocê, Menina / Chove Chuva"

.

Born in Madureira and raised in Catumbi, Rio de Janeiro’s suburbs, Jorge enjoyed singing with the church choir and going out with carnival bands from an early age. In his teens, he was a given a guitar and started playing bossa nova and rock’n’roll with it. In the 60s, he performed at Beco das Garrafas, which later became a legendary nightclub area in Copacabana and home of the bossa nova movement. And that’s where he was spotted by a producer, who promptly offered him a record deal. Soon, in 1963, the first single was out, featuring "Mas Que Nada" and "Por Causa de Você, Menina", performed along with the group Copa Cinco.

Farofa Carioca and Elza Soares - "Mas Que Nada"

.

Elza Soares' high octane interpretation of "Mas Que Nada". Live concert with Farofa Carioca, January 2009, at Estrela da Lapa, Rio de Janeiro.

An explosive samba singer with a gravelly lower range, Elza Soares - born June 23 , 1937 - came into the national spotlight in the early 1960s, just as Brazilian popular culture was making the transition from the staid pop-vocal remnants of the old "radio singers" samba cancao sound into the sleeker, more modern bossa nova style. Like many artists of the time, her own recordings incorporated both genres, adding a dynamic, bluesy-jazzy twist, with just a hint of rock'n'roll in there as well. Early on, her most distinctive trait was a growling, aggressive imitation of American jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald's "scat" style, an homage that was later toned down, but crops up frequently in her career. Soares also explored soul and funk themes as these became popular in the late 1960s and early '70s.

Dani Gurgel - "Sem Morada"

.

... "Born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1985, Dani Gurgel has been professionally working on music and photography since her early teens. She was born in a musical family, with a saxophonist father and a pianist mother. Dani had lived most of her life on instrumental music, until her debut as a singer and composer. She was a saxophone player at Tom Jobim University's big band, conducted by Roberto Sion, and at Zimbo Trio's support bigband, even a bass player at Quincas, a composers' group with Tó Brandileone and Vinicius Calderoni. That's when she started composing her own music, during college. Even though she started to sing later, listening to Flora Purim and Chick Corea on 'Return to Forever', she has Elis Regina's strenght and Luciana Souza's instrumental voice as standards. Since the beginning of her musical career, Dani Gurgel has been developing her compositional work and aggregating her generation..."

Formed in 2000, the mass-membered outfit have a dual motivation - to revive the classic Rio samba sound but also to extend its horizon to embrace funk and pop. As such, their battery of percussion readily tackles the finer moments of Brazilian pop, often via the songbooks of icons like Chico Buarque, Jorge Benjor and the mighty Nacao Zumbi.
