With a particular blend of traditional samba and humor, Os Originais do Samba became a commercial success.

The group started in 1960 as Os Sete Modernos do Samba. The next year they were invited by Carlos Machado to perform the show O Teu Cabelo Não Nega, about Lamartine Babo, and they changed their name to Os Originais do Samba. It was followed by a six-month stay in Mexico and performances in Puerto Rico and Brazil. After settling in São Paulo in 1968 they were invited to back Elis Regina in the I Bienal do Samba .

In 1977 the group's formation was: Bigode (leader/pandeiro/vocals), Zeca do Cavaco (cavaquinho/banjo), Sócrates (guitar), Rubinho Lima (percussion), Valtinho Tato (percussion), and Gibi (reco-reco, tamborim). ( Alvaro Neder, All Music Guide )

Thirty of Brown's compositions have topped the Brazilian charts over the past decade. If you flip on the television, you'll see him dancing, and of course, drumming around Toyotas. The one constant: the Bahian sound, a mix of Afro-Brazilian percussion with a touch of a reggae beat. Carlinhos Brown is one of the leaders of a movement that takes the traditional Afro-Brazilian drumming, and sets it to pop beat, with electric guitars and a brass section. A samba phenomenon from the '90s, seasoned in the Carioca suburbs, Dorina had contact very early with the samba culture. Introduced by Paulinho da Viola, her first album, Eu Canto Samba (1996), was awarded with the Sharp Prize in the Samba Revelation category. Her show Eu Canto Samba was presented for an entire year throughout Rio, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, and Recife. ( BandaVista . com )

" Born in the cosmopolitan city of Recife, but from a family until this day linked to its rural origins, Siba began a long history of learning and collaboration with the traditions of the Mata Norte of Pernambuco state, exercising through the years the fundamentals of the art of rythmic poetry, becoming on the main masters of the new generation of ciranda and maracatu nowadays.

At the same time, as a member of Mestre Ambrosio's group, he developed an innovative and personal musical language, where the dialogue between traditional and cosmopolitan, past and present, street and stage are an unmistakable brand.

In 2002 after seven years living in the city of Sao Paulo, Siba decided to return to Pernambuco state to reunite the Fuloresta band, formed by traditional musicians from Nazare da Mata, a small town of 30000 inhabitants located 60km from Recife. In 2003, in a mobile studio in the rural zone in Nazare, Siba e a Fuloresta recorded their first CD , that also was released in Europe by the French label, Outros Discos.

The band played in different venues in Brazil and also did three tours in Europe from 2004 to 2006, in countries like France, Holland, Germany and Belgium, developing a unique adaptation of the music from long duration street parties to the condensed stage format." ... ( Womex )

Mundo Livre S/A, formed since 1984 - Recife , is credited with creating a whole new genre in the ever changing musical landscape of Brazilian music - Manguebit. Created in the Pernambuco region, more specifically in Recife, manguebit (a.k.a. manguebeat) is a genre that fuses traditional brazilian sounds such as samba,ciranda, bossa nova, and maracatatu with psychedelic rock and funk, creating an intriguing sound that's great to jam to. Mundo Livre and other prominent Pernambucano musicians such as Fred 04 and Chico Science & Nacao Zumbi created this genre back in the early 90s, and it quickly evolved into a politico-cultural movement with its own manifesto, dubbed "Crabs with Brains".

Samba came of age in Rio de Janeiro during the early 20th century, nurtured in the city's 'samba schools'. Velha Guarda Da Portela are a group of veteran musicians from one such institution, whose traditions have long been transmitted orally. Aware that this left them vulnerable to extinction.

Brazilian MPB star Marisa Monte – whose father was a director of the Portela Samba School – decided to seek out, dust down and restore the finest songs in their repertoire, none of which had been recorded before. . . . It's to Monte's credit that she avoids the overcooked production that detracted slightly from her recent fine album Universo Ao Meu Redor. Instead, she favours a simple stripped down sound for the understated but effervescent acoustic arrangements.

Otto, real name is Otto Maximiliano Pereira de Cordeiro Ferreira, is one of the most important Brazilian artists from the new generation in Brazil called "New MPB". He was born in Pernambuco, Brazil. Otto was the former percussionist from the group Mundo Livre S/A (he recorded 2 albums with this group). He also played with two of the pioneers of the Brazilian musical movement called "Manguebeat", Chico Science and Fred 04, mixing instruments of percussion with electronic sounds. ( Discogs.com )

..." There is a funny story that happened around then. Francis Hime had sent a series of songs for Elis to listen to. We listened to the recording, but none tickled our fancy. At the end of the tape, he told Elis to choose any one of them, and then started to sing a song that was in bits and pieces. It was clear that we liked that one. When we called him, he said that that song was over a year old, but that Chico Buarque had never finished the lyrics. We recorded it like that, and when the lyrics were missing, Elis hummed the melody. We sent the recording to Chico and he was enthralled: he finished the lyrics on the spot: the song was Atrás Da Porta."...
