.... atypical rock formation considered by some as the Brazilian answer to Tortoise, beautifully illustrate the amazing freedom and avant-guardism of the Sao Paulo scene. Indeed, this scene has continuously been the source of many Brazilian out-rock projects from the 70's up until now. From Os Mutantes to Tom Zé, not forgetting the 80's new wave, Sao Paulo is the centre of an experimental and electronic scene, mixing numerous unexpected and successful musical influences whereas Rio of Janeiro, as a seaside resort town remains rooted in its samba and bossa heritage, and tends to stick to its tropical-beauty-sun-sea-and-beach image. Sao Paulo can have a cold, grey and rainy weather, its tentacle spread far, as far as Hurtmold's music perfectly illustrates. Organic and tormented, rhythmic and instrumental.

Hurtmold's sound is the result of a collective approach : the conjunction of a rock instrumentation and vibraphone and other clarinets give this project a unique character. The most Chicagoan of Sao-Paulo bands has already released a split album with The Eternals ( US/Chicago ), collaborated with Rob Mazurek ( Chicago Underground/Isotope 217 ) and confirmed his live talent with very intense and free performances, always keeping a taste for experimentation. Their music is instrumental but none the poorer. With quite complex constructions around a hypnotic bass, original guitar patterns and vintage
synthesizers minimal elements ( Miniotario ), dominant percussive sounds remind of the band's origins on Kampala (unreleased) for example, with its fabulous guitars, deep bass and complex rhythmics. Only trace of a more obviously rock influence, with lyrics as slogans, Chuva Negra shows the nerve and the more corrosive temper of their music, also feeding from the band's US punk roots (Minutemen, Black Flag, Fugazi, Mogwaï).
